With an influx of reported elder and nursing home abuse cases, the State of Texas is holding a nursing home abuse forum to raise awareness of this growing problem.

According to National Center on Elder Abuse and U.S. Administration on Aging (NCEA), nursing home abuse is continuing grow. The center believes the problem is continuing for a variety of reasons, such as loved ones not understanding the signs of abuse to victims refusing to speak out:

“Unfortunately, we simply do not know for certain how many people are suffering from elder abuse and neglect. It appears that female elders are abused at a higher rate than males and that the older one is, the more likely one is to be abused. The elderly may be reluctant to report abuse themselves because of fear of retaliation, lack of physical and/or cognitive ability to report, or because they don’t want to get the abuser — 90 percent of whom are family members — in trouble,” a representative from the center said.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is offering services to educate seniors on financial exploitation scams by telemarketers, who typically prey on the elderly.

“In many cases, seniors who have provided their bank account or credit card information to ‘verify’ their identity have found they were charged the monthly service fee, usually around $35, then the system never arrived or they had trouble returning it and obtaining a refund,” a representative from the BBB said.
